CIRCULAR COMMUNITY

Multi-Family Housing

Affordable housing project focused on sustainability for the elderly, young parents, and LGBTQ+ youth, aimed at giving back to the Hillcrest community by integrating the unhoused into the community rather than isolating them and encouraging community interaction.

Circular Housing embodies its lush character through the harmonious interplay of geometric shapes, delicately smoothing their edges to evoke a profound sense of security for its end users. Intertwined vegetation seamlessly merges with the structure, flourishing from within and extending outward through a secondary skin. The meticulous organization is executed following a twenty-foot grid system creating molding cubes that can be twisted, moved, and removed from the grid.

Located at 3090 Centre Street in San Diego’s Hillcrest community, “Circular Housing” is an affordable housing project consisting of 38 residential units above a community garden at ground floor and amenities in upper floors. Circular Housing is composed with two different housing typologies, studios and two-bedroom units focusing on ample and warm interiors for parenting youth, elders, and LGBTQ youth. Amenities consist of a food market and a health clinic with multiple services such as mental health therapy, physiotherapy, and optometry to care for the most vulnerable.

Residential units and amenities are seamlessly accessible through an atrium structure, featuring lookout balconies and discreet patios nestled between volumes to foster social interactions between the youth and the elderly. Additionally, the atrium doubles as a thermal chimney, extracting warm air to naturally cool the building. Embracing an inclusive approach, the concept design endeavors to integrate the building with the urban fabric, offering a lush volume along the street for pedestrians, cyclists, and residents to enjoy.
